ENCOUNTER WITH MONUMENT
#ALIYEV
Mexico City, 2016
Heydar Aliyev is considered an autocrat and is detested by a large part of the Azerbaijani community in Mexico City - in Azerbaijan, on the other hand, he is revered and public criticism towards him and his family is punished, at times even with prison sentences. Due to large protests of the azeri community in Mexico City, the Heydar Aliyev monument on the Paseo de la Reforma was removed shortly after its construction and put up in a non-public space. The intervention symbolically returns the sculpture to its starting point in the form of a glitter-stencil on the floor. Its slow dissolution and disappearance was documented on film.
